The Blob (Blob-Fluido mortale) – USA 1958
Directed by: Yrvin S. Yeaworth Jr.
Starring: Steve McQueen; Aneta Corsaut; Olin Howland.
It crawls, it creeps, it eats you alive! Beware of the Blob!!!
The Blob, a 1958 horror/sci-fi, is the right film to watch in hot, hot summer nights, just the kind of movie that back in fifties Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson could watch at the drive in, if only they would be interested in watching what went on the screen (in fact in Grease the trailer is shown). The opening song, written by Burt Bacharach and Hall David , is not exactly a creepy song it’s more like something that could came out of a jukebox on the beach (you can judge it yourself HERE).
In late fifties the film industry was still reckoning with the Hays Code (the censorship guidelines that conditioned productions since 1930’s): and here the censorship comes from outer space: in the starting sequence, in fact, the approaches Steve made to Jane are stopped just in time when the meteor carrying the blob fall on hearth. It is curious to notice that Steve McQueen (in his first film as leading actor, he only earned 3000$) and Aneta Corsaut were both much older than the teenager characters they were playing in this movie.
This movie, like many other 1950’s American sci-fi movies, has been sometimes considered a sort of a Cold War’s metaphor , but Rudy Nelson, one of the scriptwriters, denied it.
In Italy “The Blob” (or at least its title) has been made popular once again by a Rai3 (public television Third channel) satirical TV show called “Blob – di tutto di più” (everything more) on air since 1989 that presents every evening a montage of video and audio clips from Italian (and sometimes foreign) televisions repeating occasionally the “cinema scene” from the film.

Read “The blob” 🙂
How funny that the tradition of adult-aged actors playing teenagers began so early!
I love this movie! It’s one of the first “horror” movies I remember seeing as a kid, and it was one of the movies that got me interested in the genre in the first place. I don’t know if you have seen it already, but another great movie to watch is “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”. It’s a 1920s German expressionist movie. It’s a silent film, but I’m sure you will enjoy it just as much as I do. 🙂
Thank you for your suggestion. In fact I haven’t seen “The Cabinet of Dr Calgary”, but I love silent movies and I’ll try to find it.
You might be able to get it pretty cheap on Amazon. I got it in a 4-disc collection of silent horror movies.
Good job
