“Magic mirror of the wall…”

The wicked Queen

From: Snow White and the seven Dwarfs – 1937

The elegant Arcore’s nights’ trial is continuing but Mr B can’t be stopped by such an insignificant thing and is finally ready to come back! On Friday he showed all his vigorous and youthful spirit joining a meeting of young PDL (his party) militants in Fiuggi. He delighted the audience with a series of thoughts about the Euro (if we get out of Euro we could devalue our currency to restart the economy… The Eurozone Countries should put Germany out of Euro…), about the government he used to lead (the spread was not my fault… The Monti’s government is a pause in democracy…) and, most important, told that he would be willing to return as leader not only of his party but also of the government for the sake of his Country (his only objective in politics!) but only if he’ll have the 51% of votes! Bewilderment spread among the most prominent PDL members: believing in our hero’s words when he announced he was going to step aside to make way to the young they were preparing primary election to choose the new party leader before next general election. Many newspapers said that apparently Mr B is convinced that his party falling in polls has been caused by his prolonged absence from the political scene. Yesterday the Italian newspaper  Corriere della Sera wrote that he thinks he’s still the politician that the Italian voters love the best. Some pollsters, like the magic mirror used to make with the wicked Queen, told him that there’s no one like him:  in polls they conducted Mr B was liked by the 30% of voters, 4 points more than the left party leader Luigi Bersani! Maybe the time to change the mirror has come…

I’ve never understood (and still don’t understand) how that man could have been in office for such a long time. Let alone be re-elected. Thrice, if I didn’t loose count… His mirror definitely needs to be changed…

It’s difficult to understand it for me too, and I’m Italian! To make things easier: Berlusconi controls the vast majority of media in Italy in particular TV (he’s the owner of Mediaset the most important private TV network and, thanks to laws written during his governments, administrators designeted by his Party, that now is still the first party in the Parliament, has an important role in Public TV). When Berlusconi started his political adventure, back in 1994 after the “Mani pulite” (Clean hands) scandal that practically cancelled the vast majority of post WWII political parties, he used Media and Milan football club (he’s the owner of this historical Team) to grow his popularity as a brilliant business man that could drag Italy out of that crisis. I’ve always thought, like many others, that he was only interested in protecting his businesses, but too many people had been almost hypnotized by his propaganda. Probably because of the economic crisis, or probably because TV is no more such a powerful medium it seems that now we could break this spell, but he’s still trying to make his comeback poisoning the political scene.
