“Let them eat cake!”

Marie Antoinette

Today Elsa Fornero, Italy’s Minister of Labour and Social Policies, talking about young people in search of a job said: “…they shouldn’t be too “choosy”, well (…) they shouldn’t believe that a better offer is behind the corner”. As usual Minister Fornero’s speech provoked quick and irritated reactions because these days just a few people (young or hold) can be “choosy”. So the minister (as usual) said she has been misunderstood because her speech made reference to the past and because today young people can’t be too squeamish. Minister Fornero had a bad day, today: she left an Elderly Care Centre where she was gone to illustrate her Pensions’ reform because of protests. Nonetheless, after saying that she’s embittered because almost everybody contested her Labour market’s reform, she couldn’t help provoking CGIL : she said that she’s ready to go the demonstration that the most representative worker’s Union is organizing and that will take place on the 14th of November (it’s not clear if she wants to contest her reforms or if she thinks she could harangue the crowd).

It’s a hard life when you’re always misunderstood…

A humble advice to Minister Fornero: if someone ask your opinion about the situation of those families that are having economic troubles because of the crisis and because their income seems to be insufficient never, NEVER mention cakes…
