“Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination…”

Soon the 2nd Giro di Padania (Tour of Padania, 3 – 7 September) will start , it’s a man élite and under 23 five-stages bicycle race, officially part of the UCI (the International Cycling Union)  2011/2012 Road Calendar (European Tour) and promoted by Federazione Ciclistica Italiana (Italian Cycling Federation) and CONI (the Italian National Olympic Commitee). Well, what’s wrong with that? Ehi!… Padania DOES NOT EXIST!!!! It’s a land made of pure imagination, placed in Northern Italy and invented by Lega Nord (Northern League, a political party promoting Northern Italy independence and showing xenophobic tendencies). After they made a creative revision of the Italian History declaring that the Italian Government in Rome was oppressing the North, Padania (watch HERE ) became the geographical justification for Lega Nord’s aspirations of a Secession from Italy  (even when Roberto Maroni, now leader of the Party, was the Interior Minister of the Italian Republic from 1994 to 1995 and from 2008 to 2011). But, please, put aside all your mischievous thoughts… you should not believe that this race got something to do with political propaganda! This year the race will start from Emilia-Romagna to show solidarity to earthquake victims (?!?); the leader will wear a Green Jersey (just like the members of the Padania National Guard) because everybody uses yellow, rose or red; and, ok, the organizer Michelino Davico is a  Senator of the Lega Nord, but that’s the result of  a series of bizarre astral conjunctions… Besides, to prove that Padania really exists nobody needs a bicycle race: there’s Grana Padano cheese for that (so said the Lega Nord MP Gianluca Buonanno during a radio interview. If you understand some Italian you can listen to him HERE). And now, before being forced to face once again the reality, enjoy this world made of pure imagination… maybe next year we could follow a bunch of new races: Duckburg-Mouseton-Duckburg, Gotham City Classic, Smallville Gold Race, Tour of the Kingdom of Far Far Away…
