Scarface (Lo sfregiato) – USA 1932

Directed by: Howard Hawks.

Produced by Howard Hughes.

Starring: Paul Muni; Ann Dvorak; George Raft; Karen Morley; Osgood Perkins; Boris Karloff.

Tony Camonte knew just one law: Do it first, do it yourself, and keep on doing it. But nothing went as he planned it.

Maybe to avoid censorship troubles the film, showing the rise and fall as a gangster of the Italian immigrant Tony Camonte, starts with a written statement condemning the Gang rule in America and asking a governmental intervention. In the 1983 remake, directed by Brian De Palma, Tony Camonte becomes Tony Montana a Cuban refugee.

This film is based on the book “Scarface” by Armitage Trail; the script has been written by Ben Hecht (Design for living; Nothing Sacred; Wuthering Heights; Spellbound; Notorius and many others among his scripts), a former Chicago journalist who knew well the prohibitionism era.

Guino Rinaldo, the  Tony Camonte’s buddy, has been the first big and gangster’s role for George Raft, the Hell’s Kitchen born actor and close friend of the famous gangster Bugsy Siegel, that in 1959 played the role of Spats Colombo in Billy Wilder’s “Some like it hot”.

A related movie I like: Scarface – USA 1983. Directed by: Brian De Palma. Starring: Al Pacino; Robert Loggia; Michel Pfeiffer; Steven Bauer; Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio; F. Murray Abraham.
