Now, Voyager (Perdutamente tua) – Usa 1942

Directed by: Irving Rapper

Starring: Bette Davis; Paul Henreid; Claude Rains; Gladis Cooper.

Warning!!! Do not watch this movie if you’re trying to give up smoking! Cigarettes are addictive and can cause cancer and many diseases.

Love is to light together another cigarette.

This movie, based on a novel by Olive Higgins Prouty, talk about the sad story of the heiress Charlotte Vale. Dragged by her mother’s sick affection on the verge of a nervous breakdown but rescued by psychiatry, diet and make up (things Hollywood has always had a blind faith in) and the “forbidden” love of a married man (Jerry Durrance), poor Charlotte will pay for her “sin” feeling guilty for her mother death and will finally find redemption becoming the tutor of the unhappy daughter or her (ex?) lover.

Cigarette is one of the main characters of this movie: since Charlotte and Jerry meet for the first time, smoking together a cigarette is depicted as a sort of love gesture.

Seventh Academy Award nomination for Bette Davis as best actress (she had already won it twice by that time), but the 1943 Award went to Greer Garson for “Mrs Miniver”.

A related film: Thank you for smoking– USA 2005. Directed by: Jason Reitman. Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello.

Attenzione!!!

Un film “collegato”: Thank you for smoking – USA 2005. Diretto da: Jason Reitman. Con: Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello.
