Buttons, buckles, hooks, zippers, ribbons, lace… are probably the most expensive items to be used in making new clothes. The easiest way to collect them at no cost is recycling. Before throwing away old clothes (especially if too bad to be donated or reused by someone else) a good idea is to remove everything that could be used again. I know it takes time, but it’s worth doing. In my home-made collection of buttons for instance there are pieces from the sixties coming from my mother’s wardrobe that I’ve used and reused and that inspired me some new design. Same thing for buckles… But recycling is a good idea even if you have not such interesting items at home. Also recycling simple shirt buttons could be useful. I usually also recycle ribbons and lace, no matter if there’s not much of them or when they come from (anyway you must wash and press them before using them again), they could be useful one day. It may seem strange, but zippers too can be recycled if still functioning. When I use some old pair of jeans to make a bag, for instance, I always use the zipper as a fastener for some little secret pocket. To start recycle from old clothes the only thing you need are a button-hole cutter and scissors. Not a pleasant activity maybe, but very, very convenient!

Bottoni, fibbie, ganci, cerniere, nastri, pizzo… sono probabilmente la parte più costosa di un nuovo abito. Il modo più semplice per procurarsene a costo zero è il riciclo. Prima di buttare i vecchi abiti (specie se in condizioni troppo cattive per donarli o darli ad altri perché vengano usati ancora) una buona idea è rimuovere tutte le parti che potrebbero essere riutilizzate. Lo so, prende tempo, ma ne vale la pena. La mia collezione fatta in casa di bottoni ad esempio comprende una serie di pezzi anni ‘60 provenienti dal guardaroba di mia madre che io ho usato più volte e che mi hanno ispirato nuovi progetti. Stessa cosa per le fibbie… ma riciclare è una buona idea anche se non avete cose altrettanto interessanti in casa. Persino riciclare dei semplici bottoni da camicia può rivelarsi molto utile. Di solito io riciclo anche nastri e pizzi anche se la metratura è minima e senza badare da dove provengano (tanto comunque vanno lavati e stirati prima di riutilizzarli) potrebbero servire in futuro. Può sembrare strano, ma si possono riciclare anche cerniere ancora perfettamente funzionanti. Quando, ad esempio, uso un vecchio paio di jeans per farne una borsa di solito riutilizzo la cerniera come chiusura di qualche tasca segreta. Per iniziare a riciclare dal vostro abbigliamento usato le sole cose che vi servono sono un taglia asole e delle forbici. Non è un’attività divertente, ma è molto, molto conveniente!
