No regrets

The remains of my red jacket

As I already told you last week I’m recycling old woollen clothes. It’s an activity that takes you some time, especially if you want re-use the yarn produced that way to make something new. I must admit that I’d spend my time in a different way, maybe trying and find some beautiful yarn in a shop and not in my closet, if my financials were better and the bank didn’t cause me a nervous breakdown (a situation I wouldn’t recommend to enhance your creativity). Anyway…

The first thing that’s going to have a new life is an old red jacket I put aside a few years ago and desperately needed a restyle. For my new pattern, I’m going to re-use its old wooden buttons and the jacket has already been transformed into 700 gr of bulky red wool ready to be knitted. Fortunately I also discovered in my closet a bunch of untouched new balls of the same wool that will be particularly useful to replace the most damaged yarn and, what’s better my work will be easier because not everything has been lost of my old jacket: a still have the belt!

It ain’t easy to decide that you’re going to destroy something you designed and made with your own hands  spending your precious time in the process, but to leave it in your closet, all alone in the dark, it’s a better option? Do you believe that’s right to waste a beautiful (and still useful) yarn just because you don’t love the style of something you’ve made a few years ago?

Come vi avevo già detto la scorsa settimana, sto riciclando vecchi maglioni e vecchie giacche di lana. È un’attività che porta via un bel po’ di tempo, specialmente se avete l’intenzione di riutilizzare il filato prodotto in questo modo per fare qualcosa di nuovo. Devo ammettere che avrei usato il mio tempo in un altro modo, magari cercando della lana in un negozio piuttosto che nel mio armadio, se le mie finanze fossero state in uno stato migliore e la banca non mi avesse provocato una crisi di nervi (che poi è una cosa che non favorisce certo la creatività). Comunque…

Il primo capo a cui darò nuova vita sarà una giacca rossa che da qualche anno avevo messo da parte e che aveva disperatamente bisogno di un restyling, di cui riutilizzerò i bei bottoni di legno e che già si è trasformata in circa 700 gr di lana grossa pronti per essere rilavorati. Fortunatamente ho scoperto che ben nascosti nel mio armadio c’erano ancora diversi gomitoli nuovi della stessa lana che saranno utilissimi per sostituire quella più rovinata e poi il mio lavoro sarà più facile e veloce perché non tutto è andato perduto della mia vecchia giacca: la cintura è rimasta intatta!

Non è facile decidere di distruggere qualcosa che si è progettato e poi realizzato con le proprie mani  impiegando del tempo prezioso sottratto al resto della propria vita, ma lasciarlo lì, solo ed inanimato in un armadio, è un opzione migliore? Credete davvero che solo perché vi è venuta  a noia la foggia di un certo capo sia giusto sprecare così un bel filato?
